Example Itinerary: The Ultimate Inca Trail Group Trek
This 9-day adventure takes you from Cusco’s colonial streets through the Sacred Valley and along the legendary Inca Trail, blending cultural immersion with breathtaking hikes and ancient ruins. The journey culminates with two unforgettable days at Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco for your flight home.
Day 1
Cusco Arrival
Welcome to Cusco! After a private airport transfer, settle into Quinta San Blas by Ananay before meeting your local guide for an orientation walk. Stroll through the Plaza de Armas, peek into vibrant markets, and explore the bohemian San Blas district while adjusting to the altitude. A light lunch is included.

Day 2
Cusco Ruins
Step back in time on a guided exploration of Cusco’s iconic ruins. Wander the mighty stone walls of Sacsayhuaman, visit the Inca water temple of Tambo Machay, and see the Red Fort of Puca Pucara. After a picnic lunch, you can hike back into Cusco past the Temple of the Moon or return by vehicle. That night, return to Quinta San Blas by Ananay.

Day 3
Sacred Valley Hike
Leave Cusco behind as you begin your journey into the Sacred Valley. Your guide leads you through the circular terraces of Moray, thought to be an Inca agricultural lab, and along trails with sweeping Andean views. Stop in Maras for lunch before descending to the salt flats of Salineras. Overnight at Hotel Pakaritampu.

Day 4
Inca Trail Begins
Start the legendary Inca Trail at Km 82 after a short visit to Ollantaytambo. Meet your porters and enjoy a light lunch before hiking along the Urubamba River to the archaeological site of Llactapata. Camp is set up nearby, with your tents and meals taken care of.

Day 5
Into the Andes
Continue your trek through the Cusichaca Valley to the small hamlet of Huayllabamba, the last inhabited village on the trail. Ascend through cloud forest and along ancient stone paths to Llulluchapampa, a high mountain campsite with wide-open views where deer often graze.

Day 6
High Passes & Ruins
Today brings the toughest but most rewarding section of the trail. Cross Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,212m, descend into the Pacasmayo Valley, then climb again past the Inca site of Runkuracay to the second high pass. Walk along well-preserved paths to Sayacmarca before reaching your breathtaking camp at Phuyupatamarca (“the place above the clouds”).

Day 7
Machu Picchu Arrival
Descend through lush cloud forest, stopping at Wiñay Wayna, before reaching Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. Here, the first dramatic view of Machu Picchu unfolds. After savoring the moment, continue into town for a warm shower and restful night at El Mapi Hotel.

Day 8
Machu Picchu Tour & Return
Spend the morning on a guided tour of Machu Picchu, with time to explore on your own. Later, return to town for lunch before boarding the Vistadome train along the Urubamba River back to Cusco. Settle in for your final night at Quinta San Blas by Ananay.

Cultural Lares Trek to Machu Picchu"This was my first trip with Global Basecamps... It will not be my last. The overall planning was excellent. The communications prior to leaving were clear, concise and helpful... The transfer arrangements from airports to hotels were flawless."

Marie
Custom trip to Egypt and China"We just returned from a 6-week Journey Around the World, and had Global Basecamps arrange our guides and itinerary in both Cairo and Beijing. Our travel coordinator really understood our goals for our adventures with our 4 young children. As a seasoned traveler, I usually do all the planning, but felt that we needed help in these two countries. Andres arranged 2 fabulous guides for us, and a great itinerary in both countries."
